When junior Alex Chang first began making music at the age of 12, he never thought he would be signed to a record label. .

“I’ve been making music since I was a kid. I was exposed to classical music at an early age via piano and violin, and I always tried to compose songs on the piano,” Chang said.

Chang produces E.D.M, electronic dance music on a popular music- sharing website called Soundcloud. He uses the pseudonym Vestic.

“I used to go by the alias Bass Noodles because I thought it was hilarious and appropriately fitting since I’m an Asian producer. However, when I started pursuing music seriously, I knew I had to change it. After a couple days of thinking, I just came up with Vestic,” Chang said.

Five months ago, Chang was signed to ShiftAxis Records, an EDM label that has signed artists such as Da Candy and Robosteel. Recently, his first album called “The Nooice EP” reached number nine on the hip-hop chart for Beatport.com, a site that allows users to discover other EDM artists. Chang dedicates 30 to 40 hours of work to each song which he produces from his home.

“I love making remixes to popular songs since I can put my own spin on well-known tracks and really show off my signature style,” Chang said.Originals are a bit harder to make, but when I finally finish them I feel so proud. A lot of people think producing is simple and easy, but it really isn’t.”

EDM is typically a remix of a popular song or just a mix of different beats all flowing together as one. Although Chang does not write his own lyrics, he still draws inspiration from those around him.

“My main inspirations are Lookas, Yung Gud, Tomsize and Troyboi. They are incredible producers and each have their own unique style. Also, a lot of my inspiration come from friends who support me and help critique my songs. I love producing, I do not think I will stop anytime soon,” Chang said.

Although Chang considers his music producing to be more of a serious hobby than a career, he tries his best to balance school and his passion. Also, with trends in music constantly changing, Alex is always trying to keep his music fresh for his listeners.

“I learned everything about producing on my own, so I may not be as solid as some major artists,” Chang said. “I’m also just a high school kid trying to make it in a huge industry, not a full time producer. One day, though, I’ll get there.”
