The responses to the Super Bowl

“They all tried their best,” said Vaneeb Kahn, commenting on February 1st’s Super Bowl XLIX. The New England Patriots played against the Seattle Seahawks for possession of the Lombaradi Trophy. Highlights included the Seahawks scoring a touchdown six seconds away from the end of the quarter and Seahawks player Jermaine Kearse catching a pass that was thrown from forty yards away, initially appearing to drop the football in the process. In the end, the Patriots won when the Seahawks, in a move that was disputed by many of those who watched the game, decided to attempt a touchdown with a pass rather than a run.

“Except for the last play, I agreed with everything,” student Jordan Greenway told The Pen, referring to the tactics chosen by the opposing football teams.

The game was held in the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona; opening with Idina Menzel singing the national anthem. The halftime show’s main performer was Katy Perry, with musician Lenny Kravitz and rapper Missy Elliot as guest stars.

When questioned about what their favorite part of the game was, many students offered differing opinions. For Greenway, he simply said the words “last quarter”. For Ahn, it was “when the Patriots won”. Others, such as Peninsula student Sebastian Weslin, thought that “the halftime show was pretty cool.”

The forty-yard pass Russel Wilson made didn’t go unnoticed. When Greenway was asked what about the game excited him the most, he replied “The last couple minutes, when Russel Wilson made that amazing pass, and then the guy dropped it but picked it up back again.” Vane Kahn also noticed the pass, recalling it as “When the Seahawks got that fumble, a very very close fumble.” However, he recalled this when asked what his least favorite moment of the game was.

Super Bowl XLIX certainly won’t be forgotten for a long time — according to the NBC Sports Group Press Box’s website, the game was the most watched television show in history, with an audience of 114.4 million viewers.

“It was a really good game,” Weslin said. “I enjoyed watching it, and congratulations to the winning team.”
