To speak or not to speak? The First Amendment in the Bill of Rights grants all Americans the freedom of press, religion, petition and speech. However, these supposed natural rights have become the topic of controversial debate; specifically, freedoms of speech have recently been questioned.

Not long ago, an anti-Islamic video, “Innocence of Muslims,” was released via the internet and has received much backlash and controversy surrounding the topic of free speech. The video has caused protests against the US embassies in Libya and Egypt. It has also resulted in the death of US ambassador J Christopher Stevens.

The film is being questioned of violating the freedom of speech. It is claimed to have been sending hatred towards Muslim people and is crossing the line of the freedom of speech. People are saying that the First Amendment “has exceptions” for protecting the freedom of speech, which include inciting a riot and defamation.

“I believe what he has created is protected under the First Amendment,” says US History teacher John Hangartner. “However, it doesn’t mean that I believe in the message, I just feel he should have the right to express himself.”

Though freedom of speech is limited in some countries, young Americans use this privilege profusely.

“Because of freedom of speech, I am able to share my opinions without being judged,” says freshman Hannah Hulbert. “Therefore, I think that this video is protected by the First Amendment.”

Americans should be allowed to have the freedom of speech. The First Amendment protects their rights as individuals to be able to say what they want. The “Innocence of Muslims” short film should be protected, as American individuals are entitled to their own opinion.
