On Tuesday April 4, audience members sat anxiously in a packed auditorium as they awaited the opening night of Transitions, a dance show performed by Choreo dance. Transitions also represented a different change, as two new coaches led choreo this year. The Dance Department welcomed both Kimi Hendrick, Advanced and Girls Choreo coach, and Heather Horn, Intermediate and Coed/Boys Choreo coach, earlier this school year.

“This year has gone very well and I am extremely proud of both teams. They are wonderful kids and have worked hard through a difficult transition,” said Horn. “The captains have especially stepped up to fill me in and help in any way possible.”

Transitions consisted of 24 dances of  different genres.

“[Transitions] is collection of different dances that showcases the multi-talented dancers we have,” said Hendrick. “There are jazz, hip hop, ballet, Bollywood and modern pieces.”

This year’s choreo show was special, as Peninsula graduate and So You Think You Can Dance choreographer Nakul Dev Mahajan choreographed the Bollywood number. The orchestra even performed live to a number.

“I have gone [to the Choreo show] every year since my freshman year and [this show] was by far the best,” said senior McKenna Smith, who attended the performance. “The dances were so much more enthusiastic and the dancers, as well as the dances, really drew the audience in. I was truly inspired and entertained at the same time.”

Both Hendrick and Horn look forward to their future work with the Choreo program. Choreo will perform again at the end of the year pep rally, and Coed Choreo will also have a performance on May 25.

Transitions was choreo’s first major performance after the arrest of former co-ed coach Anthony Angello.

Transitions is really just that, a transition,” concluded Kate Sover, a member of Advanced Choreo. “[Hendrick and Horn] took the program on as it was and have done a great job keeping us all together and making this show happen.”
