Senior Suraj Anand Speaks at Data Science Symposium

Categories : Student Life

On May 25, senior Suraj Anand spoke at the Los Angeles (LA) chapter of the American Science Association’s Data Science Symposium. He was given this opportunity by the head of the LA chapter, Dr. Michael Johnston. Johnston encouraged Anand to give a speech that relates to the topics, such as how to apply information about data science to research, that this convention covers. This convention focuses on explaining data science concepts to high school students across the country, and Anand appreciated having the opportunity to speak about his computing research. Due to the coronavirus quarantine, the event was held over Zoom, an online video conferencing platform.

In his presentation, Anand discussed how he conducts his research and overcomes obstacles that come up when looking into a topic for research. Anand’s research experience includes the time he spent designing machine learning algorithms for his Los Angeles County Science Fair project, which created an intelligence system through computer systems such as Python 3. While delivering his speech, Anand appreciated how engaged the event participants were and the productive learning environment for data science that the convention provided.

“I was excited about the opportunity to share my research and help fellow high school students learn about data science through my speech,” Anand said. “The symposium also invigorated my interest in the subject, because I learned a little about the world of data science that I had not beforehand.”
