Whitney Houston’s life inspires students

Known for her powerful voice and touching songs, singer Whitney Houston’s life inspired millions. Houston was able to rise from humble beginnings and break down both racial and sexist barriers. Houston’s recent death on Feb. 11 shocked many, including Panthers. Although Houston is most famously known for her impressive vocal abilities, many other aspects of her life have influenced students.

“Whitney Houston was definitely an inspiration to me,” said junior Terina Tsai. “When I heard that she had passed I was definitely sad to know that such a great vocalist and actress was no longer with us.”

As a teen, Houston started singing in her church choir. After singing backup and modeling, Houston’s voice caught the attention of record producer Clive Davis, and she quickly grew to great heights as she topped music charts and became an international singing sensation. As an African American woman, Houston became an example to the world, proving that anyone is capable of great things. Houston became one of the first African Americans to both cover the front page of a magazine and receive significant air time on MTV.

“[Houston] was an inspiration to me because she was such an amazing singer,” freshman Janica Albino said. “The songs she sang came from the heart opposed to the singers we have today who sing about drugs and such.”

Although many look to Houston as an inspiration, her life does stand as a different kind of example to all teens around the world. In 2002, Houston admitted to using drugs, a rumor that had been circulating for quite a while. This drug use led to a sharp decline in her singing career and stardom.

“[Houston’s life shows that] being a celebrity isn’t just fun. It makes you very stressed and pressured,” said senior Janet Park. “[I can learn that] people should stop using [drugs], it is not a good method to deal with depression.”

Houstonwill forever be remembered as a tremendous singer. Though not of their generation, Panthers will be able to learn both from her triumphs and struggles.

“[I can learn from Houston’s life] that even small people can achieve big things,” said senior Kirbi Joe.
